This course course deals with different aspects of historical and contemporary multilingualism in the Low Countries. Theoretical discussions of relevant concepts from international language contact and language planning research will serve as a basis for an array of case studies from the Dutch language area and beyond. Some of the topics dealt with include (but are not limited to):
Brussels as the multilingual capital of Europe
Language contact between Dutch and Frisian
The Romance-Germanic language border
Dialect contact, koineization and creolization
Language conflicts and linguistic identities in Flanders
Linguistic rights: minority and immigrant languages
This course is aimed at undergrad students interested in social, cultural and historical aspects of language contact and multilingualism. Knowledge of Dutch will not be required, and students from various disciplines in the humanities are encouraged to enroll. Taught in English.

This course starts out with a comparative history of the Germanic languages, dealing with their common ancestry and showing how individual languages such as German, Dutch, English and Danish – to name but a few – emerged and developed. Next, we will discuss the rise of early written norms and the concept of standardization: what is standardization, to which extent did it affect the different Germanic languages, how do norms and notions of ‘bad language’ affect actual language use, and how does this relate to more recent trends of destandardization? Theoretical issues will be illustrated with examples from and research on the various Germanic languages. Finally, the standardization history of Dutch will be examined in more detail as an elaborate case in point. Students will, however, also be expected to apply the acquired concepts to one of their languages of study by reporting on a case study of their own. By comparing the various cases from different languages, we will discuss similarities and differences in terms of language history and standardization.
This course is targeted at any student with an interest in the language history of the Germanic languages, and Dutch in particular. No knowledge of Dutch is required, although a basic reading proficiency in more than one of the Germanic languages is advisable. Students from various disciplines in the humanities are encouraged to enroll.

Contenus du cours :
Le cours traite des théories et des recherches récentes concernant la linguistique de contact et la politique linguistique, avec une attention particulière pour la situation linguistique dans la Belgique et les Pays-Bas. Les sujets suivants seront abordés : l’interférence linguistique, le néerlandais standard comme koinè, la langue afrikaans, la frontière linguistique en Belgique, le néerlandais en Flandre française, le frison en Pays-Bas, la politique linguistique et la position du français en Flandre, et la situation linguistique à Bruxelles.
Acquis d’apprentissage (objectifs d’apprentissage) du cours :
Une connaissance de base des différentes approches théoriques et méthodologiques dans la linguistique de contact et la politique linguistique. A travers l’étude d’une question particulière, une compréhension approfondie de la littérature spécialisée dans le domaine.
Prérequis et corequis / Modules de cours optionnels recommandés :
Comme le cours est enseigné en néerlandais, une connaissance approfondie de cette langue est indispensable. Les étudiants sont supposés connaître les concepts de base de la sociolinguistique néerlandaise (cf. par ex. GERM0069-1 Histoire de la langue néerlandaise, LGER0117-1 Variation géographique et sociale dans les langues germaniques).
Activités d’apprentissage prévues et méthodes d’enseignement :
Cours ex cathedra; lecture critique et discussions collectives d’articles de revues scientifiques; rédaction d’un travail de lecture critique sur un des cas examinés.
Mode d’enseignement (présentiel ; enseignement à distance) :
Présentiel. L’enseignement aura lieu le vendredi après-midi (13:00-15:00 heures), mais plusieurs cours seront regroupé sur une seule période (au début du mois de mai).

Omdat veel studenten vaak moeilijkheden ondervinden bij het schrijven van hun masterproef, reikt VUB-taalkundige Rik Vosters in deze workshop bouwstenen aan voor een productieve en vlotte schrijfstijl. Een workshop van een halve dag, op maat van de studenten van de Wetenschapswinkel! Aan de hand van tips en oefeningen, met veel ruimte voor vragen en persoonlijke feedback, staan we stil bij:
Opbouw van een alinea: de denkbeeldige dialoog met je lezer
Verbanden tussen zinnen en alinea's
Structuur, plannen en schrijven
Retoriek en argumentatie: de opbouw van een goed argument
Schrijven, schrappen en verbeteren
Kritisch samenvatten, parafraseren en citeren
Taal en stijl: hoe schrijf ik helder, bondig, levendig en gepast?
Op het einde van de workshop is er ook tijd voorzien om in te gaan op specifieke uitdagingen bij het schrijven van jouw eigen masterproef. Je mag dus zeker een lijstje meebrengen met vragen of discussiepunten die voor jou relevant zijn. De workshop is gratis en vindt plaats op woensdag 13 december 2011 op de VUB campus, van 13:30 tot 16:30 uur.
