University Library, Free University Brussels,Pi is defined as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The number pi is an irrational number, which means that it cannot be expressed as the division of two integer numbers. The number pi is also transcendental: it cannot be expressed as the root of a polynomial with integer coefficients. Since pi is transcendental, every power of pi is irrational.
