Research question

how do age, origin and gender affect the way of people assessing the attractiveness of their own sex

Literature

Articles on homosexuality in different countries (and in general as well).

Method

we will submit a collection of pictures to different people at the Brussels National Airport, asking them to judge the attractiveness of the person (NOT AN EVALUATION OF THE PICTURE ITSELF). the interviewed person will assess the attractiveness on the following scale: 1) absolutely not attractive; 2) not attractive; 3)attractive; 4) very attractive. we then submit a short questionnaire (max. 10 questions). through the questionnaire we wish to determine whether people freely admit that they think people of their own gender are attractive. in the questionnaire we're going to use a likert scale. People will be asked to determine to what extent they agree with statements concerning gender, such as: "I would never feel free to tell my friend (of the same sex) that he/she looks good." the possible answers will be: 1) Completely disagree 2) disagree 3)agree 4)strongly agree

Expected result

Females would evaluate their own sex more attractive than males would evaluate their own sex more attractive. we also expect young people to be more likely than oldre people to admit people of their own gender to be attractive. we will divide our interviewed group in two age-groups: above 40 and below 40 years of age. Our hypothesis is that people from countries where homosexuality is taboo are less likely to evaluate their sex as attractive.

Research question

Can the way we dress influence the reaction people may have?

Literature

We are going to measure the various attitudes people have towards different types of clothing. We would like to examine how different types of clothing influence the manner through which people treat & respect others.

Method

We are going to be using a subject who has agreed to be dressed in several different clothing styles. He will accost people on the street in demand of something (selling an object in the street; asking for the road). We are not entirely sure what that something will be.
Our subject shall be dressed in the following styles:
1. The Bum (homeless)
2. The Chick man (tuxedo)
3. The Clown
4. The Completely Naked man
5. The Transvestite
There will be no direct survey or questions. We plan on making an observational examination that we shall videotape.

Expected result

To demonstrate that the way people are dressed can change the behaviour people react in front of different situations.

Can patriotism in Belgium be distinguished between Flemish and Walloon communities?

Research question

Hofstede- Intercultural communication to establish linguistic, cultural differences in Belgium. Cross cultural relationships in Belgium, Pr. Walravens.
Others TBA

Literature

our sample is based on both students from the ULB and VUB.
Questionnaire of approximately thirty questions, using a  5 item Likert scale we will try to establish a 'level' of patriotism for each major linguistic community in
Belgium.

Method

We expect our questionnaire will establish that members of the Flemish community will tend to be less patriotic than their walloon counterparts.

Research question

Attitudes towards women's role in society: how do groups of people differ in degree of liberalism ? Considering differences in attitudes between genders (all male respondents vs. all female respondents), between nationalities (cultures) and possibly between students of different religious backgrounds.

Literature

Loo, Robert. "Attitudes toward women's roles in society: a replication after 20 years."
Sex Roles: A Journal of Research. Dec, 1998. (Good overview of previous research on attitudes towards women's place in society).
Weinberg, Martin. "Sociocultural Correlated of Permissive Sexual Attitudes: A test of Reiss' Hypothesis about
Sweden and the United States." Journal of Sex Research. Feb, 2000. (Excellent study measuring atttitudes/sexual permissiveness)

Method

Sample of students of Vesalius College and VUB (n=150?)
1) Questionaire using a five-point Likert style with statements concerning gender roles in several spheres of society such as sexual behavior, work/family roles etc.

2) The statements are carefully considered by the group before being included on the questionaire and after the questionaire has been distributed and scored the items that proved less useful will then be excluded untill we hold a scale that show significant correlations.

3) A statistical analysis will be made of the data and significant differences between respondent groups will be carefully considered.

Expected result

We expect some interesting differences between some respondent groups such as men vs. women, or between VECO students and Vesalius students. If there are no differences between genders, for example, that is interesting too: could it be that young men and women (students) are equally liberal in their attitudes?

Research question

Do foreigners discriminate more than Belgians, and are females more racist than men?

Literature

We are looking for literature about racism in sociology books,  and in articles about racism, to see whether most of them report foreigners or Belgians as racist people, and the same for gender.

Method

We have designed a questionnaire with a Likert scale to measure the racist attitudes between males and females, and between foreigners and Belgians.
We are aiming for a questionnaire of up to 30 questions and the majority will be statements asking whether they agree or not.
We will be selecting people in
Belgium randomly.

Expected result

Through the responses we get, we are going to see whether it is the males or the females that answered in a more racist way, and the same for Belgians and foreigners.
