In 1968, Dr.Vermeulen graduated from the University of Ghent,
Belgium with the degree of Burgerlijk Elektrotechnisch Ingenieur. He further
holds M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University (1971 and 1975, resp.).
He was a researcher at the University of Ghent from 1968 till 1993, mainly in
digital communications and statistical image processing and its applications
in positron emission tomography, with appointments and the support from the
(then) National Fund for Scientific Research, the Ministry of Scienc Policy,
and IMEC.
Dr.Vermeulen has been with Vesalius
College (an international college associated with the VUB with instruction
in English) since its inception in 1987, as a Computer Science professor and
curriculum chair, till his retirement in 2005.
His research interests include channel coding and reduced state decoding
algorithms for intersymbol interference, statistical image reconstruction and
restoration algorithms, and, more recently, statistical issues and simulations
in the field of DNA
fingerprinting and consanguinity analysis.
